Hatha Yoga>Asana>Padmasana:

Padmasana in Hathayoga Pradipike:

Ekam pAdam taThaiakasminvinyase-dUruNi sthitam |
ItharasmisthaTha chOrum vIrAsanamitIritam ||
Place right foot on the left thigh and left foot on the right thigh. This is called Virasana. Virasana is the another name of Padmasana.

Procedure:

Sit on the ground and stretch the legs. Then place the right foot on the left thigh and left foot on the right thigh. Now the palms of the foot will be facing upward and ankles of the foot touch the lower abdomen. Hands should be put in Yoga Mudra or Brahma Mudra. Gaze should be on the tip of the nose or the attention should be on the center between the eyebrows. The center between the eye brows is called Ajna Chakra. Neck and back should in straight line. Alternate the legs so as to avoid the pressure on single leg.

Asanas Based on Padmasana:

  • Baddha Padmasana: Sit in Padmasana. Bring the both the hands from the back and hold firmly the index finger of the right foot with the right hand and left foot with the left hand. This Asana can be done with Jalandhara Bandha, Mula Bandha and Uddhiyana Bandha.
  • Urdhva Padmasana (upward Lotus posture): If the Padmasana is done while doing Shirshasana (Head stand posture), then it is called Urdhva Padmasana.
  • Utthita Padmasana: Sit in Padmasana. Put both the hands beside the thighs on the ground. Lift the entire body leaving pressure on the hands. Stay in that position for a while. This is Utthitha Padmasana.
  • Bhunamana Padmasana:Sit in Baddha-Padmasana. Bend the body towards the front and touch the head to the ground. This is Bhunamana-Padmasana. Bhunamana means soluting the ground.
  • Karna-sprishta-janu-padmasana: Sit in Padmasana. Touch the right ear to the left knee and left ear to the right knee alternatively. This is Karna-sprishta-janu-padmasana.
  • Soddiyana-Padmasana: Sit in Padmasana. Place the palms on the knees. Do Uddiyana Bandha. So doing Padmasana with Uddhiyana bandha is called Soddiyana Bandha.

Effects of Padmasana:

Padmasana is one of the most praised Asanas. In Sanskrit Padma means Lotus. Inner meaning of Padmasana is to flower. By the practice of Padmasana flowering happens in the body, subtle body and mind. This Asana is most suited for meditation, pranayama and advanced practices of Rajayoga.

Yogi who is settled in Padmasana will achive the union of Prana and Apana. Kundalini power is awakened and reaches the Sahasrara Chakra. The Yogi who practices this Asana with devotion will be released from the chains of Samsara.

Effects of Baddha-Padmasana:

Practice of Baddha-Padmasana relieves all the pains related to back-bone. All the ailments of back are cured. Spinal-cord becomes strong. All the ailments of lower abdomen are cured. The range of breath i.e. Prana is increased. Health improves very much. Padmasana stimulates the spine, bladder, adomen and pelvis. Knees, ankles are stretched. In women this Asana lessens the menstrual discomforts and sciatica. This Asana also helps ease child birth.

Effects of Soddhiyana-Padmasana:

Waist becomes slim by burning of fat in the abdominal area. Liver becomes pure, appetite increases and all the ailments of stomach are cured.

Effects of Utthitha-Padmasana:

Interstines become stronger and anal track become flawless. Appetite increases, arms becomes strong. Sagging shoulders become upright.

Effects of Bhunamana-Padmasana:

Waist and lower back becomes strong. Obacity is cured by burning of fat in abdominal region.

Effects of Karna-sprishta-janu-Padmasana:

Muscles of stomach, back, ribs and neck becomes flawless.
