Six Yogas of Naropa

Six Yogas of Tibetan Buddhist Monk Naropa are:

  1. Tummo: It is the Yoga of Inner heat. This yoga employs the meditations on Five Pranas of the body. It includes meditation on fire, by which the Practitioner can survive in atmost cold conditions. Some Tibetan Yogis have mastered this method and demonstrated the power of this meditation by perspiring heavily in very cold regions. Yogis who have mastered this method can live in very cold regions without any cloths. This method is very important in Tibetan alternate medicine.
  2. Gyulu: Gyulu is the Yoga of Illusory body is a very powerful spritual practice. It is like all the Tantric practices where they have inner, outer and secret methods. In this Yoga the body, mind is visualised as images in the mirror. The Sadhaka (practitioner) projects his self as mirror-image.
  3. Osel: It is the Yoga of the Clear Light. In Sanskrit it is called Prabhasvara. This method of Yoga involves meditation on inner light. Bringing light to entire being is the goal of this Yoga. The Sadhana of Osel includes the practice of awareness in dreamstate. Sadhaka of Osel does not loose consciousness in sleep and death.
  4. Milam: It is the Yoga of Dream. In this Yoga the world is looked upon as a dream. Buddha Shakyamuni taught his disciples to look all phenomena as dreams. A rainbow, an echo, group of moving clouds were the examples he used describe the phenomenal world.
  5. Bardo: Bardo is the Yoga of intermediate state or transitional state. In sanskrit it is called antarabhava. Six different Bardos were introduced by Guru Padmasambhava. they are
    1. The first is Bardo of birth and life.
    2. Bardo of Dreams
    3. Bardo of Meditation
    4. The fourth occurs at the time of death.
    5. The fifth is the Bardo of luminosity of true nature.
    6. The Bardo of Karmic becoming.
  6. Phowa: It is the Yoga of Tranference of Consciousness. It is the practice of conscious dying.
